Your opening scene is your story’s first impression — and it matters more than most new writers realize. It’s where readers decide whether to keep going or move on. But many beginners fall into the same traps that make their story start slow, confusing, or uninviting. Let’s look at the most common opening scene mistakes and how you can avoid them.
Many writers begin long before the real story begins — with characters waking up, commuting, or thinking about life. While it helps you understand your world, it rarely hooks readers.
➜ Fix: Start your story at the moment something changes for your main character — an event, decision, or discovery that kicks the plot into motion.
Info-dumps — long paragraphs of backstory, worldbuilding, or explanation — can slow your story to a crawl. Readers want to experience the story, not read a history book.
➜ Fix: Reveal background details naturally through dialogue, conflict, or action. Let readers learn as the story unfolds.
Throwing several names at readers in the first few paragraphs creates confusion. Without context, it’s hard to remember who’s who or why they matter.
➜ Fix: Focus on your main character first. Give readers time to connect before adding others.
A scene without purpose feels flat. If your character isn’t facing a clear problem or decision, readers might lose interest fast.
➜ Fix: Give your character a small goal or obstacle right away — something that reveals who they are and sets the tone for what’s to come.
If readers don’t feel something — curiosity, fear, excitement, empathy — they won’t stay invested. A story needs emotional depth from the start.
➜ Fix: Show your character’s emotions, motivations, or struggles early. Make readers care about what happens next.
A great opening scene doesn’t need explosions or drama — it just needs momentum, a clear situation, and emotional stakes. Readers should know who they’re following, what’s happening, and why it matters.
Remember: the goal of your opening scene isn’t to tell everything — it’s to make readers want to know more.
